Stone Age: style is the goal
This is our first review of an expansion. For a review of the base game, please follow this link.
For a general overview of the game rules, please read our review of Stone Age. Since there are not a lot of changes to the core mechanics of the game, I’m going to tell you a little bit more about what’s included in the expansion.
A Fifth player!
Now up to five players can play the game.
A new resource: decorations!
Decorations are basically wildcards that can be used as a replacement for any kind of resource: wood, clay, stone or gold. The more decorations you gather, the cheaper it will be to trade them for something new.
An addon for the gameboard.
Because of the new decorations, some alterations had to be made to the layout of the gameboard. A new little gameboard has to be placed on the orginal gameboard to extend to row of cards (5 instead of 4) and to add a trade track for the decorations.
To be honest, this must be one of the most disappointing expansions ever made. I’m a huge fan of Stone Age, but this expansion does not add any excitement to the game.
The fifth player will only increase downtime for other players and I wouldn’t recommend playing this game with more than 4 players.
The decorations are a nice addition, but don’t add anything new to the game. Since decorations can only be gained at the expense of food, you’ll only want to do this when you have a great roll when gathering food. Exchanging decorations for resources seems like a good idea, but when you have enough tools available, you’re not going to need it.
The new gameboard adds a fifth card to the row (which you can only buy with decorations), but it kicks the piles of huts of the gameboard. It would have been better if the new gameboard expanded the existing gameboard instead of replacing a part of the original board and kicking some components of the gameboard.
(+) No changes in the original game rules.
(-) Doesn’t add any excitement to the original game
(-) Playing with five players only increases the downtime for other players
